Milan’s film culture doesn’t stop at the cinema doors. Did you know you can discover it in bookshops, museums, classrooms, and even restaurants? This guide is for those who love cinema but want to take it beyond the big screen.

Think of it as a journey through Milan using your five senses — all with a cinematic twist.

  • 👀 For your eyes: Museo Interattivo del Cinema (MIC)

Let’s begin with your eyes.

For anyone fascinated by cinema, the Museo Interattivo del Cinema offers a hands-on experience like no other. Beyond historical items from the Cineteca di Milano, visitors can dub scenes, create posters, try VR and AR experiences, or explore the underground Film Archive with thousands of reels. Even better — you can visit MIC with an Abbonamento Musei, giving you access to many museums across Milan and Lombardy!

Cinema isn’t just visual - it’s also about storytelling.

Ufficio del Tempo Libero offers evening classes on film history and theory, helping you gain a deeper understanding of cinema. From the origins of film to the works of famous directors, these sessions give you the chance to listen, learn, and appreciate the stories behind the screen. I strongly recommend the class on the origins of cinema - highly recommended for any cinephile!

Who doesn’t love the smell of books?

For lovers of all visual arts — cinema, theatre, dance, and music — Libreria dello Spettacolo is the place to go. Almost forty years old and part of Milan’s independent library network, the library has collected rare volumes, scripts, scenographies, and posters. Many of its pieces came from antiquarians, and over time it also received donations from families of performers. Some items are for sale, others can only be consulted.

Time to get hands-on.

The Scuola Nazionale di Cinema Luchino Visconti is one of the most renowned film schools in Milan. Through hands-on workshops and masterclasses in directing, editing, and cinematography, you can experience the craft behind the screen firsthand.

The Fondazione Prada also regularly hosts masterclasses and special events with professional filmmakers. These tend to fill up quickly — so if you’re interested, it’s worth keeping an eye out and booking fast.

And finally — the most Milanese category of all!

MIRO – Osteria del Cinema, located inside Cinema at Anteo, is part of a full cinematic experience. MIRO celebrates cinema d’autore while delighting the palate. Each dish is crafted with care, using seasonal ingredients and a touch of creativity, so dining here feels like stepping into a film

🎬 From eyes to taste buds, you now know where to go if you want to take a break from the big screen! And if you have any recommendations of your own, we’d love to hear them
