Summer in Milan can only mean one thing… open-air cinema! 🌙
Each summer, Milan hosts an extensive programme of open-air film screenings at venues across the city, running regularly from June through September.
These screenings are regularly scheduled and typically very affordable - ranging from completely free to around €8.
I highly recommend checking them out - in my opinion, it’s one of the must-do experiences in the city!
Below is a curated list to help you navigate what’s on offer. Please note, however, that it’s not exhaustive. New screenings can pop up anywhere - in theatres, museums, or cultural centres - so stay alert. If you come across something worth sharing, do let me know! 👀
If you’re keen to catch films in their original language, make sure to check the programme in advance, as original version films can be a little rare at these open-air screenings.
Either way, it’s a wonderful opportunity to catch up on films you may have missed this year or discover exciting previews – and all of it sotto le stelle, of course!

🎦 AriAnteo Palazzo Reale
📅 1 June - 14 September
Nestled beside the iconic Duomo, within the courtyard of the Royal Palace, this grand, historic setting lends elegance to every screening. It offers a programme that blends local and international films, along with special guest appearances.
🎦 AriAnteo Fabbrica del Vapore
📅 3 June - 27 September
Set in a former industrial space turned cultural centre, this spot blends urban character with creative energy and a youthful crowd. I definitely recommend exploring Fabbrica del Vapore just beyond the cinema – there’s a vibrant year-round programme of exhibitions, performances, and events.
🎦 Milano Film Festival
📅 4 June - 9 June
The Milan Film Festival is returning for its second edition this year and is also taking us outside the screening rooms with its Scintille programme, transforming squares, courtyards and urban spaces in Milan into places of gathering. 🎦 CineVan x Social Cinema
📅 5 June - 30 June / 📅 9 June - 26 September
CINEVAN is a cultural association of filmmakers, photographers and communication professionals that brings cinema to public spaces across Milan, creating opportunities for culture and community. Through its "Social Cinema" project, it explores six neighbourhoods and the people who shape them through free open-air screenings and participatory storytelling focused on solidarity, inclusion and local life.
🎦 Mare Culturale Urbano
📅 5 June - 30 June
Situated in western Milan, Mare Culturale Urbano is a vibrant hub for artistic and cultural production. Throughout June, it hosts a programme of free film screenings featuring a mix of Italian and international titles, including some in their original language. All screenings are free, but advance booking via DICE is required.
🎦 Nuovo Cinema Diffuso
📅 7 June - 31 July
Nuovo Cinema Diffuso is an open-air cinema programme that has brought the big screen to Milan’s neighbourhoods since 2023, transforming urban spaces into places for culture and community. Free screenings take place in unique locations such as Parco Ravizza, BiG – Borgo Intergenerazionale Greco, and SUN STRAC at Laghetto Parco Nord, with a wide selection of films in their original language with Italian subtitles.
🎦 BiM Milano
📅 9 June - 15 September
Every Tuesday throughout the summer, BiM Garden, in collaboration with Il Cinemino and the Milano Film Festival, hosts open-air cinema evenings in Bicocca. A different film is screened each week, creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Could it get any better? Screenings are completely free. All you need to do is register online in advance to secure your place.
🎦 Moth Produzioni x Combo "Romantici a Milano"
📅 10 June - 15 July
Moth Produzioni returns this June and July with its open-air cinema series in two cities: Milan and Turin. In Milan, screenings will take place at Combo. Admission is free, and special guests will join selected evenings. All you need to do is reserve your place. The Milan programme, Romantici a Milano ("Romantics in Milan"), is inspired by a simple idea: in Milan, romantics recognise one another by the way they walk, by the time they are willing to lose, and by the way they stop to watch the light of a projector
🎦 Garivvo Fondazione "Oltre il Muro"

The Fondazione Gariwo, dedicated to sharing the stories of those who chose good in history's darkest moments, is hosting four open-air cineforum screenings this summer at the Giardino dei Giusti di Milano. Each event features special guests, with free admission upon registration via Eventbrite. The 2026 theme, The Wall, explores physical and symbolic barriers through a selection of films and conversations.
🎦 AriAnteo Chiostro dell'Incoronata
📅 11 June - 30 August
One of my personal favourites. This elegant 15th-century cloister, tucked away in Brera, offers a peaceful and atmospheric setting—perfect for a quiet evening under the stars. In previous years, this has been a location where Anteo has presented many films in their original version, so do keep an eye on the programme!
🎦 Anteo nella Città
📅 23 June - 8 September
Anteo nella Città brings cinema directly to Milan’s neighbourhood squares. Travelling across the city’s districts, a mobile cinema sets up temporary open-air arenas with a giant screen, 200 seats, and audio transmitted through headphones to minimise noise. Screenings cost €4–5, and the full programme and locations can be found on the Anteo website. Be quick, though * the cinema usually stays in each location for little more than a week before moving on.

📅 1 July - 27 September
Located in the sleek, modern CityLife district, this venue is surrounded by skyscrapers and open spaces. It offers a fresh, metropolitan vibe – and if you’re lucky, you might spot a few rabbits hopping around!
🎦 Estate al Castello – "Tutto il Bello del Cinema"

From 12 June to 9 September, the City of Milan hosts a rich programme of cultural events-from music to theatre-in the stunning courtyard of Castello Sforzesco. In August, the spotlight turns to Tutto il bello del cinema ("All the Beauty of Cinema"), a film festival curated by Cineteca Milano. The programme features acclaimed auteur films, cult classics, and special events, including DJ sets and jazz quartets performing music by Ennio Morricone.
Other open-air cinemas just beyond Milan are also worth exploring, including Il Cascinetto, Arena Estiva Villa Reale, Arena Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, but the list above should keep you busy all summer!

Before you head out under the stars, here are a few things worth remembering to make the most of your cinema nights in Milan:

✔️ Cinema in Festa: From 15–18 June, all films will be priced at €3.50.
✔️ Cinema Revolution: From 15–24 September, selected Italian and European films will be available at €3.50.
✔️ Bring a light jacket or umbrella (trust me on this one…) ☔
✔️ Mosquito repellent is non-negotiable 🦟
